Beginning Farmer Options

Have you recently purchased a small farm, opened a new lease on farmland, or inherited a piece of the family property? Are you a new-comer to agriculture all together? Here are two options that may be just right for you!


Farming Fundamentals

The UT Farming Fundamentals program is an online educational resource that focuses on producers who are beginning a new venture into agriculture. The program includes resources and information on the essential principles needed to build a successful operation.

Program Components

The program is broken into 2 parts: required and optional modules.

Participants are required to complete the 5 required modules and 3 of the optional modules.

Required Modules
  • Introduction
  • Financial Statements
  • Taxes
  • Farming Foundations
  • Business Actions
Optional Modules (Choose 3)
  • Livestock basics
  • Specialty Crops
  • Value Added
  • Crops

Each module is 1.5 hours of content videos. After each video, there will be a link to a quiz that must be completed. The 5 required and 3 optional modules total 12 hours of program education. In order to receive certification, participants must watch the videos and complete the quizzes for all 8 total modules. Tennessee State University (TSU) New Farmer Academy

The New Farmer Academy is a 7-month certificate program designed for those who are interested in becoming agricultural entrepreneurs. Ideal candidates for this program are those who are new to agriculture, those who wish to transition into agriculture from another field, or those who are looking for a post-retirement opportunity.

The program focuses on teaching concepts, providing the information, and facilitating the hands-on experience needed to build solid, viable, and successful agricultural businesses.

The East Tennessee New Farmer Academy is based out of Morgan County.
